What is in Your Fertilizer?
PDF File Organic Materials Review Institute on fertilizers
Effectively, many fertilizers have heavy metals in them! Some states including Texas have begun regulating the amount of metals in fertilizers but how much is safe? There truly are no safe levels of lead. You can Google more about heavy metals and fertilizers if you want!
Fertilizer prices have practically skyrocketed in price the last few years. Many companies have looked for cheap sources of fertilizers. ELS Landscape on the other hand has found what we believe to be the most pure technical grade of plant food made. It is free of metals and safer for your family. Better yet, our prices are competitively priced at or below what the big boys charge.
For the DO It Yourself (DYI) home owner there are general guidelines that have been developed but all experts agree, soil test, soil conditioning, proper watering are key factors to a healthy lawn and gardens. The best time to fertilize is not the spring but in the fall between September 15 and October 15. Generally a 3-1-2 or 4-1-2 (nitrogen - the first number, phosphorus - the second number, and potassium - the third number) sulfur coated slow release fertilizer is good for all out-door plants. Studies at Texas A&M show that Lawns receiving a fertilizer boost in the fall are more winter hardy, have a more healthy root system, and green-up earlier next spring.
Typical lawns need about 4 pound of nitrogen per year for nice green grass. A good schedule to follow for Bermuda grass, Zoysiagrass and St. Augustine grass is the "Major Holidays Rule" - Divide your total nitrogen requirement for the year by four. Put down this rate of nitrogen on or near each of the four holidays: Easter, Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day. This is an acceptable fertilizer program to follow, which does well for most lawns and gardens.
We take our excess clippings to a facility that will compost the material. Mulching the grass and leaving the clippings does not lead to thatch, this is typically caused over watering and fertilization. Mulched clippings break down relatively fast as the blades are 75% water. ELS Landscape does both; we bag and mulch mow lawns at various times of the year. We use our judgment based upon the growing conditions of each lawn so that the lawn looks great. Again, the soil test is very important.
