Environmental Stewardship - Pest control and weed control in lawns
Lush plant growth has existed in nature many years without mans use of pesticides or fertilizers. Farming and cultivation of the land has to be the foundation of civilization, as we know it. We found however, that the soil became tired and unproductive or that insects often destroyed our crops. Fertilizers and pest control products have greatly helped produce crops but not without side effects. Over the last few decades, there has been a movement in Agriculture toward a program called IPM or Integrated Pest Management. The Texas IPM Program began as a pilot project by the Texas Agricultural Extension Service in 1972.
It is believed that reliance on synthetic pesticides and herbicides for lawn weeds has caused several problems. Excessive use may lead to run off and other environmental damages but perhaps more importantly, they have become less effective, pest are becoming resistant and may in some cases actually cause a worsening of the problem.
Used improperly fertilizers will lead to poorly developed roots, poor immune systems, susceptibility to insect and environmental stresses. Over use of fertilizers also leads to water pollution. Some estimates show that as much as 50% of all fertilizer does not go to the target turf areas but volatilizes or leaches into the soil (ground water) or runs off into streams.
Landscaping has value and importance in our every day lives as well as helps the environment.
"The net cooling effect of a young, healthy tree is equivalent to ten room-size air conditioners operating 20 hours a day." -U.S. Department of Agriculture
"One acre of forest absorbs six tons of carbon dioxide and puts out four tons of oxygen. This is enough to meet the annual needs of 18 people." -U.S. Department of Agriculture
Turf Lawns also provide similar benefits of reducing erosion, run off, trapping dust and dirt as well as reducing carbon levels.
A lush landscaping improves our property value and improves the aesthetics of our surroundings as well as helps cool the surrounding urban environment
Landscaping in urban settings is not the same thing as managing agricultural crops. However, many of the lessons learned in IPM can be transferred to landscaping.
Environmental Stewardship is not so much a matter of being "organic" or natural as it is responsible use of our resources for the maximum benefit.
We could go on and on about Stewardship and the benefits.
We promote promote minimal use with minimal impact. For more information, please see these resources or call us.
